We were in trouble before COVID s truck and the situation is much worse today. Demand is going up as the pop ulation ages\, and we do not have the capacity in long-term and retirement homes. Surgical waitlists are currently unmanageably long. Costs are incr easing as the drugs and technologies continue to get more complex and expe nsive.
\nIndustrial Engineers are helping the healthcare industry im prove quality\, reduce costs\, improve effectiveness\, and increase effici ency. Many of the concepts that have been used for years in other industri es are slowly finding their way into healthcare. In this talk\, Prof. Mich ael Carter will describe strategic issues (health human resource planning) \, tactical questions (waitlist management)\, and operational problems (ou tpatient clinic scheduling).

Industrial designers have used 3D printing tec hnology for almost 35 years to build prototypes of their designs\, but the field has expanded dramatically over the past ten years. Now\, 3D printer s are used to produce a wide variety of things\, including airplane parts\ , buildings\, custom prosthetics\, edible pastries\, and more.
\nIn this talk\, Professor Kortschot will talk about the range of advanced mate rials now being used to print load-bearing parts\, which has been the focu s of his research over the past five years. He will also talk about the ho me hobbyist market\, which has exploded recently due to the expiration of key technology patents.
\nTo illustrate exactly what is involved\, P rofessor Kortschot will present a live demonstration duri ng the Lunch & Learn presentation. He will design a small part in a comput er-aided design program on camera\, create the printing file\, and send it to the desktop printer in his office to show how easy the process is.

This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the École Polytech nique massacre\, the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history. The 14 v ictims\, 12 of whom were engineering students\, were targeted because they were women in an engineering school. The anniversary of the tragedy has s ince become a day of remembrance and action against the many ways women co ntinue to experience harm\, violence and discrimination — particularly amo ng girls\, Indigenous women\, two-spirit people\, Black women\, trans wome n\, racialized women\, and women in STEM.
\nOn Monday\, December 6 f rom 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET\, we invite students\, staff\, faculty\, libra rians\, alumni and partners to attend a virtual\, tri-campus commemoration of this important day. The event includes a memorial and panel discussion about the rise of gender-based violence during COVID-19\, and how we can integrate prevention strategies into our pandemic recovery. Together\, we will re-commit ourselves to reflection\, awareness and putting an end to g ender-based violence.
\nTake action and register today at uoft.me/NDRAVW.
\nThis event is co-hosted by the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering\, Community Safety Office \, Sexual and Gender Diversity Office\, Sexual Violence Prevention and Sup port Centre and Hart House.
\nOver the 14 days leading up to December 6 \, U of T Engineering will share one action a day towards ending gender-ba sed discrimination and violence. Join the conversation using #MyActi onsMatter.

Artificial intellige nce is an exciting field spanning computer science\, engineering\, mathema tics\, and statistics. In recent years\, it has become a hot topic that pr omises to revolutionize many aspects of our daily lives ranging from our c ars to our health. However\, only a few truly understand what artificial i ntelligence represents\, and how it can be helpful in our professional liv es.
\nProfessor Sejdić will address a question that we often ask our selves: Will artificial intelligence replace my clinician? He will also co ver some of recent developments dealing with artificial intelligence and d ysphagia\, a swallowing disorder caused by a variety of neurological condi tions (e.g.\, stroke\, cerebral palsy\, Parkinson’s disease)\, head and ne ck cancer\, genetic syndromes\, and iatrogenic conditions or trauma. A rec ently proposed field called computational deglutition is a collaboration b etween clinicians and the data science community aimed at the development of clinically relevant algorithms that will aid clinicians during the asse ssment and treatment of swallowing disorders.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now a part of the standard physical scientist’s tool kit\, and it is regularly u sed to discover exciting new materials and processes. But AI is famously f ickle\, susceptible to data set bias and imbalance\, subject to informatio n leakage during training\, and reliant on humans to evaluate its performa nce.
\nProfessor Jason Hattrick-Simpers (MSE) discu sses best practices for the implementation of AI techniques in the field o f materials science\, the challenges and successes of his research\, and w hy he believes that robots can help us learn to better trust AI.

As a pr actical field\, engineering has often preferred a utilitarian approach to ethics. However\, in a world of automation and artificial intelligence\, s uch an approach may be unequal to the task.
\nTo overcome this\, we need to reframe our thinking through an ethical lens. Doing so entails bui lding a robust and flexible approach to ethical decision-making. This appr oach must allow for uncertainty before we can manage and work with a rapid influx of complex ideas.
\nOn February 8th\, Professor Robert Irish will explore two approaches—one built from classical virtue ethics and on e from Indigenous care ethics. In his presentation\, he will discuss the r ole of ethics in engineering education and the profession and how these ap proaches can help us to see our world more holistically.

Join fellow graduates to learn about exciting research in diverse subjects from U of T Engineering professors.
\nIn society\, the growing demands placed on individuals a
re becoming increasingly more complex and challenging to handle. However\,
hands-on learning opportunities can help prepare students with the compet
encies required to devise effective solutions to real-world problems.
In January 2022\, the Edward
S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Uni
versity of Toronto\, in collaboration with Professor Sean Hum\, launched a
n exciting new second-year course\, ECE295 – Hardware Design and C
ommunication\, which has students working in teams to design\, bu
ild and test a complete electronic system from scratch.
“Students are involved from the conceptual
and computer-aided design right down to the mounting of components on the
circuit boards\, as well as using a variety of modern test and measurement
equipment and debugging their designs\,” Professor Sean Hum says. “That e
nd-to-end experience isn’t available at other universities — not at the se
cond-year level.” Join us
on April 5 at the Faculty Club to hear Professor Sean Hum share his ratio
nale for implementing this innovative new course in our curriculum and how
it advances student success.
Guests will have an opportunity to network with some of the talented
students from ECE295 and to to view some of the final hardware design prod
ucts created by the students themselves!
