Join us this month as Prof. Michael Carter discusses the challenges facing the health care industry and pot ential engineering-related solutions.
\nHealth Care is the number on e industry in North America\; bigger than automotive\, telecommunications\ , and steel. Healthcare systems all over the world are amid a serious fina ncial crisis. We were in trouble before COVID struck and the situation is much worse today. Demand is going up as the population ages\, and we do no t have the capacity in long-term and retirement homes. Surgical waitlists are currently unmanageably long. Costs are increasing as the drugs and tec hnologies continue to get more complex and expensive.
\nIndustrial E ngineers are helping the healthcare industry improve quality\, reduce cost s\, improve effectiveness\, and increase efficiency. Many of the concepts that have been used for years in other industries are slowly finding their way into healthcare. In this talk\, Prof. Michael Carter will describe st rategic issues (health human resource planning)\, tactical questions (wait list management)\, and operational problems (outpatient clinic scheduling) .

\nAs a practical field\, engineering has often preferred a utilitarian approach to ethics. However\, in a worl d of automation and artificial intelligence\, such an approach may be uneq ual to the task.
\nTo overcome this\, we need to reframe our thinkin g through an ethical lens. Doing so entails building a robust and flexible approach to ethical decision-making. This approach must allow for uncerta inty before we can manage and work with a rapid influx of complex ideas. p>\n
On February 8th\, Professor Robert Irish will explore two approache s—one built from classical virtue ethics and one from Indigenous care ethi cs. In his presentation\, he will discuss the role of ethics in engineerin g education and the profession and how these approaches can help us to see our world more holistically.

In January 2022\, the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of
