He f irst worked as a software engineer\, and spent time in software engineerin g management and software product management before transitioning into a r ange of business leadership roles.\nIan currently serves on the boards of Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE\, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lasers and photonic devices) and Snapdocs (a venture-backed startup driving mort gage automation). Join Professor El ham Marzi (ISTEP) in conversation with U of T Engineering alumnus and entrepreneur Ian Small (EngSci 8T6\, MSc CompSci 8T9 ) as he shares insights and advice gained from over three decades of worki ng in engineering startups and management.
\nTopics will include how to manage and lead change\, how to make challenging organizational decisi ons\, and how to help employees and company culture navigate transitions.< /p>\n
Ian Small has spent more than 30 years in S ilicon Valley since graduating from the University of Toronto\, working in tech companies ranging from three-person startups to 100\,000-employee mu ltinationals. He first worked as a software engineer\, and spent time in s oftware engineering management and software product management before tran sitioning into a range of business leadership roles.
\nIan currently serves on the boards of Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE\, one of the world’s leadin g manufacturers of lasers and photonic devices) and Snapdocs (a venture-ba cked startup driving mortgage automation). Ian has worked with a number of Sequoia Capital portfolio companies\, including working as CEO of Evernot e (personal productivity software)\, CEO of TokBox (video platform-as-a-se rvice)\, and a lengthy stint with MarkLogic (NoSQL database). Ian also ser ved as Global Chief Data Officer at Telefónica\, following its acquisition of TokBox\, served on the advisory board to Loon (a Google X Labs spinout )\, and started his Silicon Valley career in the Human Interface Group at Apple Computer.
\nIan’s experience in Silicon Valley includes fundra ising\, tech mergers and acquisitions (both as buyer and seller)\, and tec h spinouts. Ian graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science (Computer Science option) and an M.Sc. in Computer Sc ience\, and is a holder of more than 10 patents.

The studen ts are given a single challenge:\nEffect a verified and validated sustaina ble improvement in the lived experience of a community.\nFocusing on a com munity allows students to gain first-hand experience with the issues confr onting real groups of people and to engage one-on-one with stakeholders an d community representatives.\nThe course culminates in the public Praxis I I Showcase. At the event\, students share their refined understanding of t heir opportunity and their proposed engineering designs with a wide audien ce through posters\, prototypes and presentations.\nRegistration is requir ed for guests who are not affiliated with the course.\nLearn more about th e course and register for the event here.
