\nAs a practical field\, engineering has often preferred a utilitarian approach to ethics. However\, in a worl d of automation and artificial intelligence\, such an approach may be uneq ual to the task.
\nTo overcome this\, we need to reframe our thinkin g through an ethical lens. Doing so entails building a robust and flexible approach to ethical decision-making. This approach must allow for uncerta inty before we can manage and work with a rapid influx of complex ideas. p>\n
On February 8th\, Professor Robert Irish will explore two approache s—one built from classical virtue ethics and one from Indigenous care ethi cs. In his presentation\, he will discuss the role of ethics in engineerin g education and the profession and how these approaches can help us to see our world more holistically.

\nIn society
\, the growing demands placed on individuals are becoming increasingly mor
e complex and challenging to handle. However\, hands-on learning opportuni
ties can help prepare students with the competencies required to devise ef
fective solutions to real-world problems.
In January 2022\, the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto\, in coll
aboration with Professor Sean Hum\, launched an exciting new second-year c
ourse\, ECE295 – Hardware Design and Communication\, whic
h has students working in teams to design\, build and test a complete elec
tronic system from scratch. “Students are involved from the conceptual and computer-aided design ri
ght down to the mounting of components on the circuit boards\, as well as
using a variety of modern test and measurement equipment and debugging the
ir designs\,” Professor Sean Hum says. “That end-to-end experience isn’t a
vailable at other universities — not at the second-year level.”
Join us on April 5 at the Faculty C

nnovative new course in our curriculum and how it advances student success
. Guests will have an opp

to view some of the final hardware design products created by the students

Join us for an exclusive Skule™ Lunch & Learn
featuring Professor Alison Olechowski (MIE).
Computer-aide d design (CAD) is used to conceptualize every manufactured object in our l ives\, from medical devices to cars to toys to furniture\, and promises fa ster and higher-quality design. As CAD platforms align with software devel opment tools that foster collaboration\, a pivotal question emerges:
\nCan the highly collaborative design processes of software devel opment be applied to product design?
\nProfessor Alison Ol echowski’s research applies software development principles\, like pair pr ogramming and version control\, to hardware design using CAD. Through labo ratory experiments and analysis of innovation competition data\, her work reveals important implications for how in-program collaborative tools can positively impact design\, management\, and innovation in mechanical engin eering product design.
\nRegister today to learn how teamwork may un lock unprecedented potential for engineering design.
\nVirtu al: A Zoom link will be sent to all guests who registered.
