Advising & Support
The Division of Engineering Science provides comprehensive support to all students throughout their academic careers. Staff members, including designated Year 1 & 2 and Year 2 & 3 Counselors, are eager to help students match their individual strengths and aspirations to an appropriate EngSci Option. In addition, members of faculty promote an open-door policy that fosters a student-centered culture in the program. Several activities run by both staff and faculty encourage students to candidly express their thoughts and opinions. These activities include:
- “Food for Thought” lunches where first and second year students get to discuss their programs with academic and administrative staff;
- “Option Lunches” where third and fourth year students get to discuss their programs with Option Chairs;
- Supplementary tutorial sessions at which first and second year students learn from upper-year students who demonstrate academic success and possess pedagogical training;
- A mentorship program called NSight Mentors through which first year students get matched together with upper-year students to assist in the transition from high school to university;
- A weekly e-newsletter to inform students about events and opportunities;
- An online community blackboard group to ensure students are informed on issues academic and non-academic in nature; and
- Regular workshops and information sessions on career choices, graduate school, networking and job/graduate school application skills.
