Mabel Lai

Directly after graduating from EngSci (Physics 0T6), Mabel Lai went straight into U of T Law, subsequently graduating from law school in 2009. She articled as a judicial law clerk at the Ontario Court of Appeal, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2010. Mabel was an Assistant Crown Attorney in the Peel Region Crown Attorney’s Office for just under two years, after which she left to join a criminal defence practice in Toronto. In August 2012, Mabel returned to the prosecution. She is now coming up on her third year as Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office – Criminal in Toronto.  The office is responsible for criminal appeals before the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada, trials of large-scale frauds and of justice system participants (e.g. police officers), and implementing Canada’s international treaty obligations with respect to mutual legal assistance in criminal matters. She counts herself blessed with a challenging and varied practice and with fantastic colleagues who she says, “mostly keep the engineer/nerd jokes to a minimum. “

Mabel’s insightful quote:

“An equation is worth a thousand words.”
