\n
The Future of Vaccine Production: Giving Canadian Biomanufacturing a Sh
ot in the Arm
\n
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in
Canada’s preparedness to address great challenges in the biomanufacturing
space\, including domestic production of vaccines. Disruptors & Dilemmas a
sks a panel of multi-disciplinary experts to provide their insights on Can
ada’s response to COVID-19\, and how the fields of chemistry\, engineering
\, and pharmacy are equipped to address future global crises. Through exci
ting initiatives at the University of Toronto and beyond\, our alumni and
faculty hold the keys to unlocking the power of Canadian biomanufacturing
to ensure that we are a world leader for the next great challenge.
\n
This free virtual speaker panel will be moderated by Claire Kennedy\, Co-
Chair of the Defy Gravity Campaign and Former Chair of University of Toron
to’s Governing Council. Guests will be invited to engage in Q&A with the p
anelists following the discussion.

p>\n
This month’s speaker will be Professor Daeho Kim
a> (CivMinE)
\n
Imagine walking onto a construction site to
find robotics carrying out repetitive and laborious tasks while workers fo
cused on supervising robotic systems and troubleshooting uncertainties\, e
xpending far less physical exertion.
\n
Wi
th greater development in robotics and automation\, the construction indus
try is gradually gearing up to embrace a range of robotic solutions to bre
ak through the sustained suffering from low productivity\, poor safety\, a
nd the shortage of skilled young labourers.
\n
However\, are these constru
ction companies ready to deploy robots in these dynamic construction sites
? Join us on January 11 th as Professor Daeho Kim discusses a critical element in
realizing co-robotic construction\,
worker safety\, and how his research
approach aims to foster a new workforce specialized in robot collaboratio
n with ensured workers’ safety.

\n
As a pr
actical field\, engineering has often preferred a utilitarian approach to
ethics. However\, in a world of automation and artificial intelligence\, s
uch an approach may be unequal to the task.
\n
To overcome this\, we
need to reframe our thinking through an ethical lens. Doing so entails bui
lding a robust and flexible approach to ethical decision-making. This appr
oach must allow for uncertainty before we can manage and work with a rapid
influx of complex ideas.
\n
On February 8th\, Professor Robert Irish
will explore two approaches—one built from classical virtue ethics and on
e from Indigenous care ethics. In his presentation\, he will discuss the r
ole of ethics in engineering education and the profession and how these ap
proaches can help us to see our world more holistically.

In society\, the growing demands placed on individuals a
re becoming increasingly more complex and challenging to handle. However\,
hands-on learning opportunities can help prepare students with the compet
encies required to devise effective solutions to real-world problems. In January 2022\, the Edward
S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Uni
versity of Toronto\, in collaboration with Professor Sean Hum\, launched a
n exciting new second-year course\, ECE295 – Hardware Design and C
ommunication\, which has students working in teams to design\, bu
ild and test a complete electronic system from scratch. “Students are involved from the conceptual
and computer-aided design right down to the mounting of components on the
circuit boards\, as well as using a variety of modern test and measurement
equipment and debugging their designs\,” Professor Sean Hum says. “That e
nd-to-end experience isn’t available at other universities — not at the se
cond-year level.” Join us
on April 5 at the Faculty Club to hear Professor Sean Hum share his ratio
nale for implementing this innovative new course in our curriculum and how
it advances student success. Guests will have an opportunity to network with some of the talented
students from ECE295 and to to view some of the final hardware design prod
ucts created by the students themselves!

Year 3\, PEY and Year 4 EngSci students\, are you
thinking of applying to graduate school? \n
\n
Join
Professors Arthur Chan and Rob Irish for a special session to learn how to
put your best foot forward with a strong personal statement.
\n
This event has three components:
\n
1. Watch three short video modules before the
event—find them on the EngSci Info Hub’s Grad School Info page (UTORid
login required): \n
\n
\nUnderstanding pers
onal statements: What they are\, and how to structure them \nPast
experiences: Three example statements that show you how to decide what to

Computer-aided design (CAD) is used to conceptualize every ma
nufactured object in our lives\, from medical devices to cars to toys to f
urniture\, and promises faster and higher-quality design. As CAD platforms
align with software development tools that foster collaboration\, a pivot
al question emerges:
\n
Can the highly collaborative design p
rocesses of software development be applied to product design?
p>\n
Professor Alison Olechowski’s research applies software development
principles\, like pair programming and version control\, to hardware desi
gn using CAD. Through laboratory experiments and analysis of innovation co
mpetition data\, her work reveals important implications for how in-progra
m collaborative tools can positively impact design\, management\, and inno
vation in mechanical engineering product design.

\n<
p>Pr
axis II is a Year 1 course that allows Engineering Science students to
refine and apply their engineering\, design\, and communication skills. T
he students are given a single challenge: \nEff
ect a verified and validated sustainable improvement in the lived experien
ce of a community.
\nFocusing on a community allows students to
gain first-hand experience with the issues confronting real groups of peo
ple and to engage one-on-one with stakeholders and community representativ
es.
\nThe course culminates in the public Praxis II Showcase. At the
event\, students share their refined understanding of their opportunity a
nd their proposed engineering designs with a wide audience through posters
\, prototypes and presentations.
