This talk explores my adventures in entrepreneurship and the launch of new laser technologies, from key breakthroughs to the challenges of turning scientific discoveries into successful ventures. Along the way, it covers the journey from undergraduate engineering through graduate research and into the corporate boardroom, sharing insights into the transition from academia to industry and the highs and lows of building a deep-tech company.
Speaker bio:
Darren Kraemer earned his Engineering Science degree from the University of Toronto, specializing in condensed matter and photonics. He then pursued a PhD in the U of T Chemistry department, focusing on molecular spectroscopy using mid-IR femtosecond lasers. During his PhD studies, Darren co-founded Attodyne Inc., developing ultra-compact picosecond lasers for industrial applications, and led the company through to its acquisition.
Afterward, he became CEO of Light Matter Interaction Inc., where he applied novel short-pulse infrared laser technology to surgical procedures. With multiple startups under his belt, Darren continues to explore innovative laser technologies and push the boundaries of the field.
