Alvin Mok (EngSci 0T3)
The role of data science within hedge funds has become more prominent in recent years, as firms look to maintain a competitive edge through data-driven analytics. Alvin Mok will discuss emerging trends in the field, including how alternative data is used to inform investment decisions and how AI is being integrated into research workflows. The talk will focus on practical examples and consider what this shift means for engineers interested in working in finance.
Speaker bio:
Alvin Mok is the Chief Information and Data Officer at Select Equity Group, L.P, with responsibilities ranging from (Alt) Data alpha capture, Portfolio Analysis, Data Science/ AI and Application Development/ Infrastructure. Select Equity manages approximately USD30 billion across long-only and long/short equity strategies that share a fundamental investment philosophy and centralized research effort.
Prior to joining Select Equity, Mr. Mok was the Head of Investment Insights and Global Platform at Orbis Investments. Prior to Orbis, he was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey and a Program Manager at Microsoft.
Mr. Mok received a B.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto (highest honors) and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar).
