Since its inception in 1934, Engineering Science courses have been delivered by instructors with diverse expertise in engineering- and science-related subjects from across U of T Engineering and the university.
“We are truly grateful for the efforts of our faculty and teaching assistants to continually build on pedagogical best practices and deliver the best possible educational experience for our students,” says Professor Natalie Enright Jerger (ECE), director of the Division of Engineering Science. “In turn, our instructors value teaching such an exceptionally curious and engaged student body who keep them on their toes.”
Each year the Division presents the EngSci Teaching Awards to outstanding instructors and teaching assistants. Awards are given to teaching staff in the program’s core courses, with one each for the two Foundation Years and four for the upper years, in recognition of the diverse course offerings in EngSci’s majors.
Recipients are selected by students at the end of the academic year and the awards are presented at the final Division Meeting of the year.
Many students commented on the characteristics shared by all recipients: an infectious passion for and deep knowledge of the subject matter, kindness and patience, and a willingness to use different or new approaches to ensure all students grasped concepts well.
“This year I was especially touched that students selected the late Professor Peter Stangeby, who unexpectedly passed away in October,” says Enright Jerger. “The many wonderful comments we received from students highlight the special rapport he had with our first-year classes and what a big impact he made on them.”
